EMC World Documentum Recap Day 2

Day one of EMC World had all the makings of the perfect conference. There was a good turn-out, plenty of buzz about new products, some exciting announcements around roadmap and strategy, an acquisition, lots of partner back-patting, and, to cap it all off, Jeroen became CTO!

At events such as these, day two is typically somewhat of an anti-climax. With all the major news out of the way, it’s time to get stuck into the nitty-gritty of the technologies. It’s fair to say there was still plenty of hype about products, especially xCP2 which is undoubtedly the hottest Documentum product associated with #mmtm12.

On day one, most of the buzz seemed to be coming from EMC employees so we wanted to hear what the users said. Some of the EMC partners (TriTek, Beach Street and Cap Gemini) were given a 3 week window to build applications using xCP2 and shared their thoughts. It seems to be quite positive as you can see in this quick write up from @macgirlsweden.

The general gist is that xCP2 is much better than its predecessor and is more web 2.0 like (it’s open and it looks nice!!!). A demo of the product will feature in Jeetu’s & Rohit’s keynote speech which should be online soon although don’t hold your breath – our contact still hasn’t delivered!!!!

If you have questions about xCP2 you can put them directly to the EMC product team. @Ahsonahmad and colleagues invite you to tweet your questions using #askxcp .Your answers will be personally dealt with by tomorrow.

And what of D2?

I’ve heard on the grapevine that D2 isn’t getting much traction outside of the US and despite the fanfare at Momentum Berlin, there hasn’t been much to talk about other than the exceptionally cheesy ‘de-man’ video. Of course we are probably being unfair (not about the cheese part) because it’s early days and EMC still refuses to say whether it will replace WebTop. So we waited with bated breath about the new release and the news was accepted positively especially about the UI (described by one blogger as amazing!). Check this very interesting quote re D2 from a Forrester Principal Analyst

LifeSciences – Some really promising news

Again we’re a little light on the details here but the actual statement that EMC IIG will refocus it’s solutions on the Life Sciences domain is definitely worth noting. EMC’s market share in this sector has been dwindling in recent years (it used to have ~85% of the top 20 global pharma companies) and with various alternative technologies gathering momentum, they needed to do something fast. Sharepoint based solutions like NextDocs and CSC’s FirstPoint are making dents into what was once a beach-head sector for Documentum pre-EMC days. The fact that EMC is fighting back by developing solutions that manage the ever growing regulatory compliance issues is great news!!

We’re expecting more today including some important news from Jeroen so watch this space (tomorrow!). We were hoping to have the videos for this post hence the delay!
