Day 3 at EMC Momentum World 2013 + other Momentum 2013 blogs…

We are a little late getting this out today but some of the feedback we were expecting has,…. errr…. got lost in the cloud! Possibly something to do with Bruno Mars & the party last night.

Just before things get wrapped up at Momentum Las Vegas today, here is what happened yesterday…

Rohit’s keynote was the big event of the day and is definitely worthwhile catching if you have the time (1:10).

Rohit reinforced EMC’s commitment to enhancing the platform & integrating solutions to help customers do business in the cloud. He talked lots about the innovations of the stack, how the solutions fit together and how IIG is looking ahead.

As always there were some great new terms and terrific quotes but my favourite has to be: “Future-proofing” – what a verb!

John O’melia came to the stage and talked about the live migration for SOBI using EMA which was completed earlier in the day!

Jeetu Patel gave an update/recap on what Syncplicity has been doing in 12 months. He and Rohit did a live demo to show how Syncplicity was used to prepare for Momentum. It is nice to see EMC ‘eating their own dog food’ and the UX looks really slick. They even did it on a Windows Surface!

As with last year, there is a lot to love about Syncplicity but let’s try to focus on Documentum here – last year we were criticized for going overboard on this! ;-)

Jeroen Van Rotterdam got people excited about Synplicity and Outlook in his presentation.

DOCUMENTUM INDUSTRY SOLUTIONS – EMC IS HIP AGAIN!

Rohit talking about Transformative Solutions for Energy (Watch the keynote for Andy Crowne’s demo of the EPFM

Lalith Subramanian on EMC being HIP

Virginia Backaitis has done another fantastic write-up on how EMC has stepped up to the plate in their bid to win over the industry verticals.

EMC announced new releases

xCP

Rohit’s keynote included a really nice presentation of xCP.

Here is the list of xCP xCelerators that have been released.

Macgirlsweden posted this picture showing Process Extensions in xCP 2.0

And finally …..WebTop??

Peggy Ringhausen provided some clarification on how long WebTop will be supported.

Day 2 promises to offer much more. Included in this post are some of the highlights from yesterday. We’ll bring you another wrap up tomorrow.

To start, check out this cool visual representation of EMC’s blue print for the future.

As always at Momentum, MacgirlSweden has been her usual productive self.

She kicks things off with her First impressions of Day 1 at Momentum. Then, following the presentation of Jeroen Van Rotterdam, this post on Documentum Overview and Architecture. And finally, covering all the new stuff of what to expect in Documentum 7 and the future Documentum Roadmap. Great job Alexandra! @macgirlsweden

Hot Momentum topics

1) Documentum for Life Sciences

The TSGBlog makes the point that IIG has really gone to town this year in catering for what is one of their ‘bread and butter’ verticals. TSG will be following as many of the life sciences sessions as possible. Their first post is a great wrap-up on the Documentum D2 solutions for Life Sciences.

EMC’s Rohit Ghai likens the enhancements of Documentum’s QM & eTMF solutions to a GPS for Lifesciences.

There has been a big fanfare around the new migration tool EMA which, Virginia Backaitis reckons, will mean Documentum upgrades won’t hurt anymore.

EMC certainly deserve some credit for their novel idea to showcase a live migration - for the Swedish company SOBI which can be tracked here but not everyone in the Documentum community is convinced:

2) EPFM

Watch out for EPFM later today. Yesterday Rick Devenuti announced that there will be a new EPFM solution for Asset Operations.

Finally, EMC launched it’s Momentum Europe 2013 website!

180 Days to go! ;-)

We couldn’t make Momentum Las Vegas but we’ll be posting updates on what’s happening throughout the week.

This year the format has changed slightly with the keynotes coming later today so day 1 was a little quiet. Rohit Ghai kicked things off with a short video on what content you can expect at Momentum this year.

EMC is offering some interesting incentives for customers: 1 weeks free assessment of how to migrate to Documentum D7.

EMC IIG: “POWER TO THE PARTNERS”

In a simple but effective move, EMC has a new category for all partners. EMC’s head honcho of channels - Gregg Ambulos – posted this. (I love the cool partner video on this link too).

The ‘big man of content’, EMC’s Lee Dallas gave us his first impressions on the partner summit – check out paragraph 6 which is perhaps worthy of a new blog post in the future.

Very interesting to hear that, IIG now has around 75 certified partner solutions.

EMC IIG Partners of the year were

Congratulations to all – we look forward to hearing more from you this week.

Other Momentum related blogs to check out

Think back to this time last year…… on the back of a hugely successful EMC World in Las Vegas, you probably had high expectations for Documentum. New sexier products and the return to key strategic verticals had many people’s juices flowing …… EMC even threw in a pretty shrewd acquisition to boot!

Now fast forward to Momentum Austria and again recall how Documentum’s largest product launch in history helped EMC win over some of their media skeptics. And how could anyone forget the way xCP 2.0 enchanted the community?

To gauge whether this positive outlook was shared by customers & partners, we tried to find out what projects they were planning for the year ahead. Many told us to mind our own business but a good number said they were expecting to recruit Documentum experts. A few even hinted they would be starting greenfield projects!

Wowsers….it was true; Documentum was back and in a big way…..

But, 1 year on is it really moving?

Well, not in my opinion. The customers & partners we chatted to seem delayed in starting projects and the number of job posts on generic job boards across Europe & the US are down. Many contractors in the marketplace are experiencing gaps in employment and there is some frustration in the community that the same jobs just keep coming back only to peter out again. (xCP Developer in Glasgow anyone?) (UPDATE – 3rd May – Believe it or not this post has just been filled – one of the guys who accepted the job was supposed to be interviewed there last year!)

And then there’s the demand for Administrators or Support people. Has demand died completely because companies are not investing into their infrastructure. How many Admin jobs have you seen recently?

I generally regard the contracting market as a great barometer of market sentiment and the worrying sign for me is when there are *good* people available who would normally be snapped up in an instant. This is definitely a trend in the US & Europe for 2013!

Contractors I have chatted over the last few weeks are of course making the most of their time off. Some have been somewhere ridiculously hot for a holiday, some are trekking around Nepal, others are busy fixing their mother-in-law’s bathroom (and not doing a great job of it either!).

There have even been some who have crossed back from the dark side by accepting permanent jobs! Woooo – scary!

But EMC has some great sales figures just out….

Yes – we keep hearing that EMC is doing well. They recently released some improved figures (which we will look at some other time) suggesting they are on track for a turnaround. But then there are also rumours circulating that Fred Monjazeb was recently replaced because of poor performance.

Whatever positive signs are out there, we are concerned with the jobs market and while there may be some large projects being started and some very active partners, there seems to be little to get excited about right now. No wonder some people are working on the mother in law’s bathroom!

EMC World better be good this year! ;-)

Guest Blogger Julien Fontaine is getting excited about getting to grips with the latest Documentum products at EMC World 2013 Momentum next week!

EMC World here we go !

On May 6th and for about three days, EMC World will be live at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada! Like every year, it’s not easy to explain to your boss why it’s really important to be at EMC World, but this year, for the second time, I will participate in this annual event.

This year, I feel particularly excited cause I have a lot of solutions to discover. With my new job, I haven’t got enough time to work with xCP 2.0 and I hope the hands-on lab will be useful for me. I’m also interested in discovering the new development framework for D2 in order to develop new widgets… Then, I will keep an eye on Syncplicity and this new business model for EMC.

So one week to work with :

Documentum D2 4.1

xCP 2.0

Syncplicity

But EMC World is also the place for big announcements as every year, IIG makes has some big news. At the last Momentum in Europe, IIG announced tons of new version of product (Captiva, D2, xCP, Doc Sciences, Documentum 7.0). In my mind, this year’s announcement will be around vertical solutions. I predict a buzz with the Life Sciences Vertical Solution, EPFM solution and a brand new solution. I think we can also expect an announcement with new features on Syncplicity as Jeetu Patel is always back on center stage during Momentum.

And EMC World is also the best place to network and have some fun with peers. This year, I will try to blog live and describe for you the atmosphere and behind the scenes! If you want to communicate with me during the EMC World, just use my twitter:

Documentum Mover & Shaker interview #1 – Julien Fontaine

Hello Documentum fans !

Today, we begin a series of interviews with the ‘Movers & Shakers’ from the Documentum community around the world. We’ll bring you their insights, history and personal views on the Documentum technology.

We kick the series off with a bang by talking with Julien Fontaine. For those of you who don’t know Julien already from the EDN site, he has a huge passion for Documentum which is reflected in his recent election as an EMC Elect 2013. I am also pleased to tell you that Julien is joining the Documentum City blog team and will be featured here on a regular basis when he is not busy in the forums, getting to grips with his new job, or indeed with his new baby son.

Documentum City:

So Julien, these are exciting times for you recently. You just had your first baby in October, became an EMC Elect member and moved jobs this month, tell us about yourself briefly…

Julien Fontaine:

Hi Andrew. First, I want to thank you for this interview and say that I’m really proud to now be part of the Documentum City Blog. I will try to be a good fit! So, my name is Julien Fontaine and I’m from France, from Nantes to be exact. Nantes is located just under Brittany. I live between Nantes and Atlantic ocean.

And how long have you been in the Documentum business?

I’ve been working with Documentum for a few years (about 6). I began doing some development based on WDK and moved quickly onto D2. Now, I try to manage projects based on DCTM but I still love being technical so I have to put my hand on the heart of the system. Geek or not geek, that’s the question !

How did you get into working with the stack?

Oh. I remember… at the time, I, with a colleague of mine, had to maintain a big application based on DCTM 5.3 and Webtop but a webtop full of customization. When we added or removed just a few lines in our JSP, everything went wrong… We lost a lot of time patching a little bug. We spent too much time trying to understand the application without strong knowledge on WDK… Since this day, WDK scared me… I’m still being seen by a psychanlayst ;)

What’s your specialists area?

Definitely D2… We, in France, work since many years with D2… We really participate in the product’s “childhood” and it definitely changed our way to do Documentum projects. To be honest, it’s too difficult to remember how we did it before D2. I also worked with many D2 plugins that will be available soon … Lots of fun!

I will provide more information about D2 in a blog for Documentum City.

What are three most important qualities that would make you someone want to hire you?

Oh, it’s hard to talk about me… I think I’m enthusiastic and I really like what I do. I’m also persuasive and that could be useful in pre-sales role. Then I’m quite funny…

Where do you currently work / what will you be working on?

I just changed to a new role. For the moment, I work at CGI and I have to set up a new team specialized in IIG stack. Perhaps it’s too early to talk more about this position.

What attracted you to join their team?

The challenge. It seems very attractive on paper… In a few weeks/months I can say more about this new position.

How is Documentum doing in France? Is it it still as popular?

It’s a bit difficult to say. After a lot of migration from WDK project to EMC Documentum D2, the past year was not so easy. As it is the world crisis, we do not have lot of new Documentum implementations… But, I think it will be better this year, I hope. The ECM market is still growing in France and with new problematic challenges like Big Data and Cloud environments, we can definitely be optimistic.

France is also very near Switzerland and Luxembourg. There’s big projects in these two countries, perhaps a good idea, just in case !

Who in your opinion are the biggest competitors – Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Nuxeo, Alfresco?

To be honest, as I mainly work in the LifeSciences sector, the biggest competitors seems to be Sharepoint. In fact, there’s lots of vertical solutions based on Sharepoint and Sharepoint seems now mature for this specific market. In other fields like Public Sector, things are different, and open source players like Nuxeo or Alfresco are the biggest comptetitors.

How do you see the future for ECM projects in France?

For me the future is in the cloud. For the moment, its just marketing term but I’m sure it will change. I really like also the big data concept and I’m sure it’s very close to the ECM Market.

What IIG technologies or future trends are you most excited about?

I’m waiting for the Syncplicity integration with Documentum. I’m also waiting for vertical solutions based on D2 or xCP. I already have looked at the Quality and Compliance solution and just the slideware of the eTMF solution and ePFM. The future looks good for the IIG product.

What about your thoughts on the cloud, xCP 2.0?

I am waiting for a project with this technology. As I said early, for me it’s just marketing at the moment and I’m not sure big companies are already mature to use public clouds… Wait and see.

To be honest, I just heard about xCP 2.0. so want to try it at the next momentum in Las Vegas on May.

Tell us about your nomination as an EMC Elect 2013?

I’m proud to be involved in the first EMC Elect program. It is everytime interesting to exchange with all your peers and with prestigious peers like Johnny Gee to name just one.

What are you mainly using the EDN Community for (contributions, knowledge sharing, blogging, ideas, gamification) ?

I use the EDN Community everyday. I try to do my best to answer technical requests about things I know, I use it also for social purpose and to share a few technical blog posts.

What do you think about the RAMP system and badgeville?

I’m sure it is a good idea… I don’t have the statistics but for sure, more and more people are involved in the community and I’m sure the gamification concept helps.

Are you planning to be an EMC Elect 2014?

Of course, but I need to do my best to stay in… and I also need to find time!

So no time for hobbies then?

For the moment, not really. But, I try to dive and to do some sports (running, biking, and sleeping ;).

Do you have something that you want to show us or plug?

Yes, just if you want to follow me on Twitter (@julien_fontain) please be my guest. I tweet about EMC IIG and wine (other hobby)… And, I will be at EMC World this year so if you want to talk with me, it will be my pleasure.

Thanks to Julien – we look forward to hearing more from you in the future and congratulations again on becoming part of the EMC Elect 2013 team.

Thanks again Andrew.

If you’ve never heard of EMC the phone company or EMC the makers of casual clothing or you don’t know what a ‘Continent Management platform’ is, you probably won’t stand much chance at an eRoom dating agency.

Documentum aficionado Julien Fontaine gives us the heads up on why Documentum community members should be excited by EMC Elect 2013.

“All of you (perhaps… or not) know the famous EDN Community (https://community.emc.com/). Some of you are frequent users, some of you are opportunist users, some of you are not yet users but it will change.

It will change because the community changed and now it rocks… Since about one year, the jive based community decided to begin Gamification of the community. They use badgeville (http://badgeville.com/casestudy/emc), an American leader on the gamification market which has increased the overall user activity by 21%… That means that all the questions you have (technical at first) will find a quick answer and increase your business efficiency. Try it and let’s discuss on this post.

Some of the best known technical Documentum experts are involved in the community… I mean Johnny Gee for instance (https://community.emc.com/people/DCTM_Guru).

But what is EMC Elect 2013?

EMC wants to select a few members, “influencers” by their participation in the community, on facebook, twitter, blog posts, etc… This year 75 people have been elected, for software and hardware on the EMC side. I’m proud to be one of them (the only French Documentum EMC Elect member as far as I know!). For the moment, we are just a group of Elect people and are waiting for new challenge (looks like the Avengers of EMC)…. To be continued.”

Julien Fontaine

Julien Fontaine is a French Documentum specialist with ~7 years experience in the ECM space.
